Try to respect the dress code. To black-tie events I’ve always worn just a black V-neck sweater with a white shirt, a black tie, black trousers, and white Stan Smiths. I’m not trying to be different—it’s just how I feel comfortable. I don’t like when people adamantly go against the grain to make a statement.
Before leaving the house, take a look in the mirror. Make sure there’s no food in your teeth and your zipper is up. A lot of people don’t take the time to do that.
I don’t think you should worry too much about what you look like naked. Once you’re naked, you’ve kind of closed the deal, right? Worry about the outside, because that’s where the decision is made.
Men don’t know enough about being courteous toward women. You should get into a cab before a woman so she doesn’t have to slide across the seat. And you should always go first into a revolving door so she doesn’t have to push—unless it’s moving, then let her go first.
I don’t have a BlackBerry. I carry a notepad and a pencil—and I don’t use a mobile. I’ve reluctantly moved to a digital camera, but only because they make them so nice and small now that they don’t spoil the line of your suit.
For a weekend away, a man should bring a simple shirt, two cashmere sweaters, three polos, and one pair of jeans. For shoes, either sandals or light leather moccasins—just the essentials.
I think it’s very important to look sexy at home. I hate it when people say, “I will take this to the countryside because it’s not fashionable anymore.” I love being well-dressed when nobody’s looking at me.
